Yorkshire Masters Championships

A much larger contingent of swimmers competed in The Yorkshire Masters Short Course Championships which were held in Leeds at the John Charles Centre in May.

Swimmer of the championships should go to Colin Sage swimming in the men’s 80-84 years age category.

In his 50 metre Breaststroke, Colin actually broke the British Record for his age group.

That record now stands at 50.48 Secs and was Colin’s first Gold medal of the day.

He also won 4 further Gold medals on the day. They were:

50m Freestyle with a time of 41.83 Sec
100m Ind. Medley with a time of 1.54.98
100m Freestyle with a time of 1.35.99
50m Backstroke with a time of 52.16 Sec

Betty Grayson also won 3 Gold Medals. Betty competes in the Ladies 80-84 Years category. Betty swam 2 better than entry times on the way to her medals.

This was in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 1.04.06

And in the 100m Ind. Medley with a time of 2.40.01

Her final Gold being the 50m Backstroke with a time of 1.12.52

Ann-Marie Blowman who only started swimming within the last 3 years also did herself proud by winning medals in her 3 swims and also recording PBs in the ladies 35-39 years category.

She won the Gold in the 200m Freestyle with a PB time of 3.07.83
Silver in the 400m Freestyle with a time of 6.39.33 P.B.
Bronze in the 100m Freestyle with a time of 1.23.41

Steve Allen reduced his events due to other commitments but in the Men’s 55-59 years category took the:

Gold medal in the 100m Backstroke with a PB of 1.10.31
Bronze medal in the 50m Breaststroke with a time of 37.90 Sec

Vicky Hewick swimming in the Ladies 35-39 years category also came away with 3 medals.

She won a Silver medal in the 100m Freestyle with a PB of 1.16.73
Silver medal in the 50m Freestyle with a PB of 34.43 Sec
Bronze medal in the 50m Breaststroke with a time of 43.90 Sec

John Major secured more medals for the club and swam 2 faster than entry times on the day:

Silver medal in the 100m freestyle with a time of 59.16 Sec
Silver medal in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 26.15 Sec F.E.T.
Bronze medal in the 50m Breaststroke with a time of 33.81 Sec F.E.T.
4th in the 50m Butterfly with a time of 30.34 Sec

Simon Jensen competing for the club for the first time claimed a Silver medal in the Men’s 25-29 years 400m Freestyle with a time of 4.55.48

Nicola Benstead was also competing for the club for the first time. Nicola was competing in the Ladies 40-44 Years category and swam 2 PBs. She won a silver medal in the 100m Breaststroke with a PB of 1.49.01 and also came 6th in the 100m Freestyle with a PB of 1.46.99

Gregan Clarkson also picked up 3 Bronze medals on the day in the Men’s 30-34 years category:

400m Freestyle with a time of 5.05.25
200m Freestyle with a time of 2.26.54
100m Freestyle with a time of 1.05.13
4th in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 28.30 Sec F.E.T.

Not to be outdone, Gregan’s mum, Suzanne Clarkson swimming in the Ladies 60-64 years category won a further 2 Bronze medals to add to the family haul:

200m Freestyle with a time of 4.14.85
50m Freestyle with a time of 50.55 Sec

Ian Harman swimming in the men’s 55-59 years category swam a faster than entry time in the 50m Butterfly with a time of 33.28 Sec and
5th in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 29.81 Sec

Nina Curran swimming in the Ladies 40-44 age category also had a successful day. Nina gained a Silver medal in the 100m Ind. Medley with a PB time of 1.33.66

She also came 5th in the 50m Backstroke with a time of 44.24 Sec
5th in the 50m Butterfly with a time of 40.33 Sec P.B
12th in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 36.86 Sec

Husband and wife team Cleve and Tracy Meyerhoff could only compete in the morning due to family commitments. Cleve competed in the Men’s 55-59 age category:

Cleve swam in the 50m freestyle with a PB time of 33.61 Sec
Not to be outdone by Tracy swimming in the Ladies 45-49 years age category:
Tracy also swam the 50m Freestyle finishing 5th in a PB time of 42.22 Sec

Mark Ellam was our final individual swimmer of the day. Mark was competing for the first time as a Master after many years out of the pool, in the Men’s 50-54 years category and was delighted to finish 4th in the 50m Breaststroke. Mark’s time was a PB in 43.50 Sec

In addition to these fantastic results, the club also entered two relay teams on the day:

The Men’s 220 years+ Freestyle team won Gold with a time of 2.03.73
The Men’s 120 years+ Medley team won Bronze with a time of 2.29.92

In total at the Yorkshire Masters Gala the club came away with a total of 31 medals:

11 Gold, 10 Silver and 10 Bronze.
