National Masters Championships

The National Masters long course Championships were held in April at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Best performance of the event must go to Colin Sage, who from 6 swims came away with five gold medals and one silver medal in the Men’s 80-84 years category. His golds came in:

100m Backstroke with a time of 1.48.96
200m Freestyle with a time of 3.47.28
50m Freestyle with a time of 41.48 Sec
50m Breaststroke with a time of 51.06 Sec
100m Freestyle with a time 1.33.41

His silver came in the 50m Backstroke with a time of 49.56 Sec.

Steve Allen was close on Colin’s tail with 3 Gold medals from 3 swims. Steve swims in the men’s 50-59 years age category and his victories came in the:

100m Backstroke with a time of 1.13.80
200m Backstroke with a time of 2.42.01
50m Backstroke with a time of 33.46 Sec

Our third individual medallist was Gregan Clarkson who was concentrating on Freestyle events and who picked up an injury during the event which affected some of his later times. Gregan was competing in the men’s 30-34 years category.

He picked up a bronze medal in the 800m Freestyle with a time of 10.33.30
He was also 6th in the 400m Freestyle with a time of 5.02.44
11th in the 100m Freestyle with a time of 1.20.87
15th in the 200m Freestyle with a time of 2.32.72
28th in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 28.92 Sec.

Further medals were also won by the Men’s 200-239 age freestyle relay team made up of John Major, Cleve Meyerhoff, Steve Allen and Ian Harman who won the Silver medal in a time of 2.00.51.

The Men’s 160-199 years age category Medley relay team of Steve Allen, John Major, Ian Harman and Gregan Clarkson also won the Silver medal.

John Major was swimming in the Men’s 35-39 years age category. He was placed:

6th in the 50m Breaststroke with a time of 35.70 Sec.
8th in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 27.24 Sec
9th in the 50m Butterfly with a time of 30.31 Sec

Our final swimmer at the Nationals was Suzanne Clarkson who was swimming at her first Nationals and first Long Course event. She was swimming in the Ladies 60-64 years category and was placed 8th in the 50m Backstroke with a time of 1.09.83
10th in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 49.69 Sec.

In total the club came away from the nationals with a total of 12 medals:

8 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze.
